The ALBATROSS

ALBATROSS is a project inspired by the recent changes in our environment and the natural disasters that are a result of those changes. We set out to design a workstation that provides essential functionality to a community that, in the event of a natural disaster, would not otherwise be available.

ALBATROSS Functionality

Power Supply and Battery

We designed a power supply that accepts all commonly available power sources to power the system and charge the internal battery. The internal battery pack allows ALBATROSS to charge other devices via USB.

Satellite Communication

By communicating with the NOAA weather Satellites, ALBATROSS can give up-to-date weather information. ALBATROSS also has a built-in GPS that can real time track where the device is.

Off-Grid LAN

ALBATROSS has the capability to create its own LAN utilizing WiFi. Devices that have WiFi capabilities are able to connect to the device and access its server.

Encyclopedia

Downloaded directly onto ALBATROSS are multiple Encyclopedias that the user can access from both ALBATROSS itself, and other devices while connected via the LAN.

Assembly

We used 3D scanning, modeling, and printing technology to create a system that secures the many components found within ALBATROSS. Click to view a rendering of how the components fit together.
